School Counseling Services

The School Counselor works as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes Speech and Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Consultants and Coordinators, Teachers, First Nation’s Liaison, Administrators as well as students, families and outside agencies to remove barriers to education and enhance opportunities to engage in learning. 

Understanding the psycho-social factors that contribute to optimum learning, the job of the School Counselor is to help children stay in school and be successful learners.  The School Counselor assists students with problems that occur for students in the school, their families and in their communities.
 
The School Counselor supports students in a variety of ways:
  • advocacy for students;
  • counseling services for students;
  • liaison with student, family and school;
  • problem-solving and development of intervention and behavior plans;
  • referral and intervention planning with outside agencies;
  • collaboration with other professionals to develop intervention plans;
  • absenteeism, suspension, behavior management and drug/alcohol intervention and supports;
  • promotion of Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
 
The School Counselor also provides support for: 
  • Critical incident response,
  • Risk assessment – threats, suicide, aggression, violence, harm of others, self-harm.
  • Grief and traumatic event counseling and follow up support
  • School safety planning.
  • Evaluation and updating of the critical incident process.
 
The Referral process:
  • Students can be referred by teachers, outside agencies, administrators, family, and self (age 16 and older).
  • Contact the School Counselor to make a referral for a student
